Yelm Community Schools were allowed to remain in Binding Conditions at this time because we were allowed to transfer previously-set aside resources into the general fund last year. This made it possible to establish a balanced budget through the current school year. Without that action, we would already be in Financial Oversight.
With an estimated ending fund balance that is less than 1% of the annual budget and no remaining reserves, there are no additional local resources to create a balanced budget for next year.
If the proposed levy fails on November 3, 2026, we have been informed this would trigger the state to appoint a Financial Oversight Committee. They would immediately begin meeting with district leaders, would mandate additional cuts for this school year, and anticipate needing to cut approximately $9.5 million next year based on current budget projections.
This would necessitate an estimated 80-90+ RIFs (Reductions in Force, or layoffs) for the 2027-2028 school year. Reduced staff will necessitate increased class sizes, reduced student programs and activities. Deeper reductions will also be made in already-reduced school operations (maintenance, custodial, grounds, and safety/security), school supplies and curricular materials.
