School Performance Report

The purpose of Prairie Elementary is to educate, nurture and guide children in developing their potential.

Prairie Elementary, as part of Yelm Community Schools, is a safe, welcoming, student-centered, and collaborative learning environment.  In partnership with parents, students, and community leaders, YCS staff are dedicated to helping all students meet performance expectations and achieve their full learning potential.

Prairie is a high-energy school. On any given day, you will see happy kids highly involved in learning and playing. Pride shines throughout our school. Parent volunteerism and participation abounds. Minimal student misbehavior is the result of effective management by school staff and strong community/family support. Our staff is dedicated to providing the best possible school experience for both students and their families. We care about kids and strive to know them all by name and by need. We celebrate our accomplishments every Friday at assembly. It is here, you can truly get a feel for the climate of our school.
In June 2004, Prairie Elementary completed the final year of a three-year Model School Initiative Grant provided by the Gates Foundation. This funding provided Prairie a level of technology that we maintain today. Each classroom has a 1:5 ratio of computers to students, a presentation device, and a document camera for instruction. Prairie also has a technology lab with 27 updated computers. Each year we purchase the Accelerated Reader program on-line, providing our student's access to over 100,000 book titles.
The Prairie Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) is a highly visible, active, and supportive group. They organize our Fall Carnival, Spring Fling and a Kid's Night Out. They are generous in their support of Prairie students and staff. In 2005, they installed a beautiful new big toy unit. In 2007, they received a $10,000 grant from the Williams Company, and another $7,000 in 2008.

Yelm Prairie Elementary, a design-winning school, opened its doors in September 1984 to approximately 450 students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. Since that time, we have seen our grade configuration change from K-6 to K-5, K-4, then to Preschool-4, and now a Preschool - 5th grade. Our student population in October 2011 was 480 students (not including preschool and birth-to-three).
We have 18 regular education classrooms for our K-5th grade students. In addition we have special subject teachers in Reading, Math, Special Education, Music, Band, Art, P.E. and Media/Library.
In 2005, we opened a Yelm Community Schools developmental preschool on our site.  In addition, the Yelm Community Schools Birth-to-Three program is also housed here on our site beginning fall of 2010.

Prairie Elementary continues to work diligently to develop a comprehensive School Improvement Plan based on a variety of data. School Improvement goals focus on reading, math, writing, technology, and school climate.

Prairie staff is available 45 minutes before school and 15 minutes after school. In addition, we have numerous volunteers who assist at Prairie on a weekly basis. Our PTO consists of all parents and staff.

Our overall average attendance is 98%.

2015-16 Average Expenditure per Student: $10,400.
