    Good Afternoon Class of 2020,
    Happy May Day!
I hope this email finds you well and safe.  I wanted to provide you with some dates and a couple of 'asks' related to future happenings regarding school and graduation.
First, I want to say thank you to the 300+ seniors who picked up their cap and gown.  What an emotional day for me and for everyone who attended.  Being able to see each of you and in some cases your families, truly energized me and I hope you were equally affected by the opportunity.  I did make it a priority to look each of you in the eyes along with your family to reassure you that we are working hard for you on many fronts.  I and we (YHS staff) care about each and every one of you.  The graduating Class of 2020 will forever maintain a special place in our hearts and memories.  I shared this quote at our staff meeting yesterday as I believe it amplifies our current environment:  "In the midst of uncertainty, there is also opportunity". These past weeks have reshaped our work as educators and as students.  It is during times like this where we are put to the test and we know that we will come out the other side stronger than before.
    Where to from here?
We have 21 cap/gown packets needing to be distributed along with 5 boxes of announcements.  We also have just under 100 students who have not yet picked up a yard sign.  IMPORTANT:  Students who did not order a cap/gown can do so at In addition, we just received the Honor Cords, we have FFA Cords, Medals for our Valedictorians, Salutatorians, Sashes for National Honor Society.  We are going to make each of the items mentioned in this paragraph on Thursday, May 7 from 11:00 - 1:00PM.  We are coordinating this opportunity with our lunch distribution (please know that lunches are served only until 12:30pm).
    Important Calendar Items:
May 7 - Remaining Yard Signs, Cap/Gowns, Announcements, Stoles, Honor Cords, Medals (11:00-1:000pm)
May 11-26 - Class of 2020 sends Pictures with Cap/Gown Regalia - More information regarding the pictures will be coming to you next week

The High School Beyond Plan is important as a graduation requirement.   For those who have not completed their SLC to present your HSBP - please contact your counselor or Tornado Time teachers as soon as possible.
Continue to work on your academics - we cannot escape from our learning.  Stay engaged, and continue to do your best work as your final transcript will be representative of your involvement during this time.
We miss you and the opportunity to enjoy the end of the year with you on campus.  Let me know if you need anything - I am here for you and will continue to do my best to serve you and your families.
    Have a great weekend!

    April 10, 2020
    Greetings to All Seniors,
For the past couple of weeks we have received several announcements regarding how schools will be conducted.  Originally, we were all anticipating a return of April 27.  Clearly, that has changed.  I want to reach out to you today regarding your senior year.  First and foremost, I want to express my deepest and most sincere thoughts about how the Class of 2020 is impacted by Covid-19.  This was to be your year; your opportunity to experience a 'right of passage' as you concluded your thirteenth year of formal education.  This was to be your year to experience traditions such as;  Prom, Senior Sunset, Grad Walks through elementary and middle schools you may have attended, Senior Awards, Scholarship Celebrations, Appointments to Military Academies, acceptance to college or trade schools, opportunities to be with friends and classmates, and much more.  The culmination of your senior year was to include your experience of walking across the stage in the Tacoma Dome and to hear "Congratulations to the Class of 2020 it is now time to turn your Tassel" which indicates the final gesture before leaving the floor of your graduation ceremony and into the 'real' world.  Be assured that we are continuing to explore a variety of options regarding what graduation might look like at the end of the school year.
    Senior Recognition:
How do we proceed beginning Monday, April 13, 2020?  To begin, I want to assure you that your teachers and all staff members of YHS are thinking of you and developing ways to recognize the class of 2020.  Beginning April 10 at 8:20pm for 20 minutes each and every Friday until June 19 our stadium lights will be turned on in recognition of each of our seniors.  You might be asking yourself, Mr. Johnson, why 8:20pm for 20 minutes?  The most notable difference between regular and military time is the manner in which hours are expressed.  This time chosen represents 20:20 and we are keeping the lights on for 20 minutes in honor of YHS Seniors. This is one way of acknowledging your achievements and to show support for you during this time away from the YHS campus.  Yes, it is symbolic in nature; but it is also an expression of our dedication to honor you.
    Seniors on Campus:
You might remember that we postponed our delivery of your personalized Cap, Gown, and Graduation Announcement orders.   With support of Jostens you can now mark your calendar for Friday, April 24, from 11:00am to 3:00pm. This is our opportunity to deliver on the pre-ordered graduation items.  We ask that all seniors make their way through Tornado Alley (whether you purchased items or not) where you will receive a Grab n' Go bag of food and a Graduation Yard Sign. For those seniors who ordered their cap and gown, we will also have the items available for pick up.  Students still needing to order their cap and gown and announcements, please visit or call 800-JOSTENS (567-8367).
Guidelines for a Successful Drive Through on Campus:
We would love to see ALL of our seniors as they drive through to pick up their items.  Here are some guidelines to make the delivery on April 24 successful.  Students must stay in their cars. You will notice support staff will be wearing protective masks and gloves.  Staff will not approach vehicles unless asked to pass items through a window.  We will place items in the trunk of vehicles upon request.  Once items are received cars must leave the parking lot immediately.  As you can imagine, we are wanting this to be a successful experience; and we are counting on the support of everyone involved.
    Continued Engagement in Your Education:
Finally, there are many questions about school and how to proceed.  Seniors, it is essential that you continue to be engaged in your academics.  Communicate with your teachers daily and complete the essential assignments being provided.  Your transcript will reflect, through a grade, your achievements during the fourth quarter.  It is important that you follow through with assignments/assessment provided to support your final semester grades in June AND to receive your Diploma coupled with the strongest transcript possible.
There will be additional opportunities for YHS to recognize the Class of 2020!  A team of staff and students are developing ways to celebrate you. Mostly, we miss seeing you at school.   Please look for additional email updates as we make progress through the remainder of the year.
Take care, and we will see you on April 24 from 11:00am - 3:00pm.
