Post Secondary Career Planning: Career Matchmaker

  •  Grade: 11th
    Lesson Description:
    1.  Students log into Career Cruising

    Student Username:  YELM-(first five letters of last name) (first  three letter of first name) 000
    Example (for Jon Smith):  YELM-SMITHJOH000
    If the last name has less than five letter use an underscore for the remaining spots:
    Example (for Alex Sy):  YELM-SY_ALE000

    Student Password:
    If the student has never logged in before the password is their birthdate: (mmddyyyy)
    Example:  August 25th, 2000--> 08252000

    2.  Click on "My Plan"
    3.  Click on "My Assignment and Activities"
    4.  If using a Chromebook:
         a.  Click "Post Secondary Research Worksheet"
         b.  Once the file opens, click on "file"
         c.  Save as "Google Sheets"
     
         If using a PC or MAC:
         a.  Click on "Post Secondary Research Worksheet"
         b.  Once the file opens in Excel, click on "Enable Editing"
    5.  Return to Career Cruising
         a.  Click on "My Plan"
         b.  Click on "My Education"
     
    6.  Click on "My Saved Schools"
    7.  Click on one of your saved schools.
    8.  Click on Admissions and find the website link on the lower left hand side.
    9.  On the college website click on the "Admission or Apply" Homepage.
    10. Complete the "Post Secondary Research Worksheet" (from step 4) for 3 Colleges/Universities/Apprenticeships/Trade Schools:
         a.  Name of School
         b.  Application Deadline
         c.  Total Enrollment (Number of Students)
         d.  Total Cost
         e.  Average Financial Aid
         f.  Fun Fact #1 (your choice)
         g. Fun Fact #2 (your choice)
     
    11.Save the completed "Post Secondary Research Worksheet"
         If using a Chromebook:
         a.  Click on "File"
         b.  Chick on "Download"
         c.  Click on "Microsoft Excel"
         d.  A popup will appear - Click on "Show in folder"
         If using a PC or MAC to Save the completed "Post Secondary Research Worksheet":
         a.  Click on "File"
         b.  Click on "Save As"
         c.  Select folder on computer's drive and save with the name "Post Secondary Research Worksheet"
    12.Upload the document in Career Cruising once the worksheet is completed:
         a.  Click on "My Plan"
         b.  Click on "My Assignments and Activities"
         c.  Click on " Post Secondary Research Worksheet" assignment
         d.  Click on "Upload a File"
         If using a Chromebook:
         a.  Click on "Google Drive"
         b.  Select the "Post Secondary Research Worksheet" Excel spreadsheet and click "open".
         If using a PC or MAC:
         a.  Navigate to file used in step 11.
         b.  click on "Post Secondary Research Worksheet" Excel spreadsheet and click "open".

Post Secondary Education Planning: School Selector & My Saved Schools

    2.  Complete School Selector
         a.  Click on "My Plan"
         b.  Click on "My Education"
    3.  Under "School Selector Results", choose:
         Type of School
         Locations & Setting
         Admission Difficulty
         Special Program Options
         Tuition
         Enrollment
         Majors Offered
         Campus Life & Services

    Undergraduate or Career/Technical Schools and take questionnaire to generate a list of potential schools.  Answer questions about your preferences in each of the following categories.  Tip: to move to the next question, click on upper right hand corner of the survey. 

    4.  My Saved Schools - At the end of the questionnaire a list of potential colleges will appear.  Review these options, delete schools you are not interested in and SAVE selected schools by clicking on "Save to My Plan"

Post Secondary Career Planning: Financial Aid, Scholarships, & FAFSA FSA ID

    Lesson Description:
    1.  Students log into Career Cruising

    2.  Click on "My Plan"
    3.  Click on "My Scholarships and Financial Aid"
    4.  Complete the "Financial Aid Selector"

    Career Cruising will generate a list of scholarships once you complete the questions and click on "view results".

    5.  Save 2 or more scholarships to your plan 
     
    6.  Click on "Federal Financial Aid" and read the information.
    7.  Click on "Local Scholarships" and save 2 or more local scholarships to your plan.  (Click on the scholarship and then save it to your plan) 
    Lesson Continues:
    Your senior year High School and Beyond Plan will include filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  We start this process in Junior year by creating a FSA ID, which will be your username and electronic signature when you fill out the FAFSA your senior year.
     
    1.  Open a new tab in Chrome and go to FAFSA.gov
    2.  Click on "Start Here" under, "New to the FAFSA Process?"
    3.  Create a FSA ID.  This will be how you log into the application and sign it once it's complete.  A parent/guardian will also need to create one before filling out the FAFSA application.
    4.  Write down, or document in a protected note in your phone, your login information so it can be used next year to file the FAFSA.

4 Year Course Plan

    2.  Students click on "Choose My Courses" from the menu on the list.
    3.  Enter your current year classes by clicking the boxes.
    4.  Enter the classes you plan on taking next year.
