YHS student Lyra Bertels won the prestigious Washington State High School Journalist of the Year. As yearbook and newspaper design editor, her entry included an impressive portfolio of design, writing and photography from three years on the yearbook staff and a year on the newspaper staff. School Business Partner Yelm Dental held a Yelm High School Free Dental Day on January 25. Yelm Tornado Anushka Maldonado was recognized as the 4A WIAA Athlete of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). Anushka, a senior, earned her title by scoring 25 points, getting nine rebounds, six steals and two blocks against Stadium, on January 19. On January 11 against South Kitsap, she racked up 21 points and 13 rebounds. Yelm won both of these games. Each winner receives a letter of recognition from the WIAA executive director, a commemorative WIAA State Athlete of the Week T-shirt and a certificate. Anushka is the second Yelm athlete this year to receive this award.
Dusti Nash was named the FFA District 2 Teacher of the Year. Matt Mounts was named FFA District 2 Mentor of the Year. These awards reflect peer recognition and are a tremendous honor for our teachers and the FFA program.

Outstanding improvement in student achievement led to Lackamas Elementary being named a 2012 School of Distinction, one of 54 elementary schools in the state to receive this prestigious designation. The School of Distinction is awarded to only five percent of the highest improving schools in the state over a five-year period. This is the second year in a row Lackamas has received the award. A formal presentation will be made by ESD 113 Superintendent Bill Keim on December 20.
The Yelm Area Chamber of Commerce announced its 2012 Distinguished Member Awards during the December 11 Chamber Forum. Royden Lepp, award-winning animator, illustrator and author who lives in Seattle, made a visit to Prairie Elementary on October 12. During a special assembly, Mr. Lepp shared his background, telling students how he really liked to draw. On Tuesday, September 4, Yelm Community Schools will welcome over 5400 students through the front doors of the district’s ten schools for the first day of school. It will also be the first day of school for over 40 new teachers hired over the summer. Superintendent Andy Wolf welcomed the new teachers during the New Employee Orientation August 22-23. There they were introduced to the curricula, programs and culture of Yelm Community Schools and received training in the latest district initiatives. “They are an exceptional group of new employees and we are very excited to have these folks join the YCS team,” Supt.
