Newest Class: Financial Literacy

In this new math course you will learn to connect algebra to what’s going on in your life.  Since you are earning, spending, saving and investing now and will be throughout the rest of your life, it’s good to understand finance in mathematical terms and to gain confidence in your ability to manage money.  The problems are applications-based and use real-life scenarios.

The course reviews and strengthens your algebra mechanics and problem-solving skills, while at the same time teaching you selected advanced mathematics topics.  This course will satisfy your third year (Algebra II equivalent) of math as long as you have passed Algebra I and are taking or have passed Geometry. You must have your parents’ permission to take this in place of Algebra II.  This is a two-part course and will be offered each term.

Foods & Nutrition

If you are considering a career in food service, or just want to cook terrific meals at home, then this is the class for you!  Both brand new and experienced cooks will find techniques to challenge their skills in the kitchen during the labs in this class.  Tentatively, this class will be offered three times this year, with emphasis on preparing for a career in food service, as well as planning great meals for home.

Term 1 we will focus on preserving the harvest and cooking with local produce.  Term 3 we will learn to cook for 50 or more. Term 5 we will focus on food production.  Each term there are two required cooking labs on Fridays, and one required field trip on a Friday.  All other coursework is done independently.  This is a one-term course.

Textiles & Apparel

Have you ever wanted to create your own clothing?  Ever wondered how textiles are made or wanted to learn to weave?  Do you have a talent for fashion design that you would like to pursue?  If any of these are true for you, then consider taking the Textiles & Apparel class at YES.  No sewing experience is necessary and you do not have to have a machine at home.

During the two required labs, held on Fridays, you will explore natural fibers, learn to knit or crochet, learn to weave on a loom, and learn to sew on a machine.  You will repurpose a garment, sew a pillow case and choose a garment to sew from a pattern. (You will need to provide the pattern and fabric for your projects if the school does not have extra.) Fashion design is a part of this class, so be ready to be creative! A field trip may be scheduled each term.  Tentatively, this class will be offered in terms 2 and 6 this year.  This is a one-term course.

 Child/Lifespan Development

The first half of this course is completely independent study and primarily deals with birth and infants to toddlers, while the second half focusses on human development throughout the lifespan.

Once a year the course is offered with labs where we explore ways to encourage healthy lifestyles for children and senior citizens, and all ages in between.   One lab will focus on foods & nutrition issues throughout the lifespan, while the second lab will focus on carrying on family traditions and cultures.  These labs will be scheduled on Fridays or at other times that work for all students registered for the class.  There will be a field trip for this class, scheduled for after 2:00.  This class will be offered Term 4 this year.

FCCLA/Leadership

If you want to make your experience at YES the best it can be, join the FCCLA/Leadership team of students and have an impact on your school and your community.  This group works to keep our Commons decorated and to help all YES students find a way to be involved in projects at school.  Community service is a primary focus and we have led food drives, provided gifts for Yelm families at holiday time, painted over graffiti for an area business and led a penny drive for scholarships.

We plan our projects to be of service, to help create positive change and to have fun as a group.  We meet all through the school year.
